For Art’s Sake Project: A 52 Week Journey ~ Week 1 In A Professional Photographer’s Challenge

photography challenege, free photoshop, photoshop actions, photoshop templates

Week 1 In A Professional Photographer’s Challenge

As I sat down to work on this project this week, I of course felt stuck, with no idea where to start.  I knew week one would be the hardest. The first week I wanted complete freedom so that I could see what would happen. But as I go forward I am going to give myself some more guidelines I think, the complete freedom was a bit overwhelming. I had no idea what medium to even use.! Should I draw? Paint? Shoot? I stared at this robot on my desk. I bought him on Ebay for another project and I think he is just fantastic. I love old industrial textures, form and colors. I then took a walk outside to think about what else inspires me. The skies around here in the South, especially during the spring, are amazing. I missed them so much when I lived in Los Angeles. This is significant because I also think that living in Los Angeles is where this disconnection to art began. People love the blue sky all the time there, they move there because of it. I missed the clouds. So with no thoughts in my head of meaning or interpretation, this is what came out of my efforts. I sat back and looked at what I had just created. I started to laugh to myself. As I stared at this robot in the clouds, I noticed that he looked as if he was dreaming of being free. This of course reminded me of my current state of mind, feeling like a robot longing to be free.
    for art
I was struck by the magic of art, and the reason we do it. It is living inside of us even when we are feeling detached from it, or not putting time into it. It is longing to come out, to be expressed. Is this my best work? Not by far. Was I nervous to show this to anyone since it is not my best work? Absolutely. Putting ourselves out there as an artist, especially when we are in times of struggle or self doubt, is one of the hardest things to do. It is a subjective thing to begin with, as well as a highly personal thing. Not a good combination for sensitive folk like us artists.:)But that is part of it, taking the risk to put yourself out there so that you can possibly inspire, help, or bring joy to someone else. Some people won’t like this, but that is ok because I made something for art’s sake, and I am putting it out there. Hope you will join me and make something this week. Anything. For Art’s Sake.
Hope to see you next week for Week 2 In A Professional Photographer’s Challenge. If you have stuff you made that you want to share please post them on our Facebook page. We would be honored for you to share then with us!

Emily Exon - What a wonderful idea! I recently quit my full time job to focus on my photography business and I always use to be grumpy about how little time I had to focus on my creativity…and now I find that even though I have the time, I struggle to be creative and struggle to share my triumphs and failures in my creations. For Art Sake sounds like a brilliant idea to be active creating and share the beauty in creation.
Your photo was fantastic by the way! I look forward to what you come up with next! Best of luck! =)

The ABC’s of SEO ~ Business Tips for Photographers from The Shoppe Marketeer

The ABC’s of SEO ~ Business Tips for Photographers

I’ve been at the sales and marketing “game” for most of my career, which unbelievably to me, is almost 15 years long! Working with small companies, much like you do as a photographers, I wear a lot of hats, and some still don’t fit as well others. One my most ill fitting hats to this point has been that of SEO Guru. How many of you can relate to the feeling of “SEO?? O.M.G!”? For three little letters, SEO can be surprisingly overwhelming! One of my professional goals for this year has been to grow into that hat, and who better to share my new-found knowledge with than our “Shoppers”? As I learn, step by step, you will learn, and hopefully we will all wear the SEO Guru hat a little better when we reach the end of 2014. With that, I bring you the ABC’S of SEO. And the best way to learn the alphabet is to start at the beginning.

The ABC’s of SEO ~ Business Tips for Photographers

WHAT IS SEO?

Search engine optimization (SEO) is the process of affecting the visibility of a website or a web page in a search engine’s “natural” or un-paid (“organic”) search results. What does that mean in English? It just means that when you “Google” the relevant words to your photography webpage, you see your page high in the search results. It’s often said that building a website and not making SEO a priority is like building your business in the desert. Your web page is one of at least 4.49 BILLION indexed web pages on what I lovingly refer to as the inter-web. SEO is how you make sure that YOUR page is one of those that isn’t just sitting in the desert.

Competing for top rankings in the search engines involves three elements:

  • On-page – Optimizing and improving what is on your website pages.
  • Off-page – Measuring and improving things are that are happening beyond your site, such as the number and quality of links coming into your site from other sites.
  • Technical factors.

WHERE DO YOU START?

The answer to this question, in my opinion, is easy for photographers! Start with what you know! What do know? Images, of course! For all businesses, the first element in SEO is on-page SEO. There are a lot of tips and tricks that we’ll work our way through as we grow into our guru hats, but for photographers, perhaps the best place to start is with all those beautiful images you post to your blog. How do you that? The same way you do everything in SEO, with keywords. Your business is more than likely geographic. You likely have categories you specialize in and maybe you have a style, like vintage or modern. Do you shoot on location or at a studio? Natural light? Find those 3 to 5 keywords to fit for your photography business that will help people who need your services find YOU! We’ll just use “Nashville Wedding Photographer” as an example.

Once you have your key words what do you do? You use them to “tag” your images. When you upload your images to post to your blog, you have options (and we all like options). In WordPress, you can click that nifty little pencil icon when you click on any image in the post you’re writing and you’ll see something like this:

So what do you do with those magic keywords? The ones we are using for example are “Nashville Wedding Photographer, and they go here:

Then, you just click UPDATE here:

Just like that, you’ve stepped up your SEO a notch. Just think of the words “Alternative Text” as really meaning “SEO tag” for your images.

Keep in mind that this is just like the letter A  in the  ABC’s of SEO For Photographers and that SEO takes time. You won’t see your page in the first page of Google search results overnight and there are many other tips and tricks that I will be sharing with you as I learn myself, but this is one great start for photographers. You have tons of beautiful images to share and with just an extra step, they can be working for you even more.

Keep an eye on Business Tips for Photographers from The Shoppe Marketeer, and I’ll tell you about there are 3 H’s in the ABC’s of SEO for Photographers soon!

By the way, if you’re looking for a way to organize some of those lovely images to post them on your blog (and then TAG them for your SEO), check out some of The Shoppe’s blog board sets HERE.
